Episode 118: We Opted to Make Baked Goods Instead

Listen to Episode 118

HAPPY NEW YEAR TWoLers! It’s 2013 and we are off to a good start. Well, a start at least. On tonight’s episode, we (SteveTooncesKatie) give our account of the shenanigans at MSG for the Phish holiday run. The building, tickets, antics, and much more are on the agenda. I’d tell you more but this is a podcast after all. Next, we hit your “lot reports” which include some Bob Weir action, inquiries into our “website,” and a FUTUREBIRDS report. Finally, we look ahead to some upcoming shows: Umphrey’s McGee, Ryan Montbleau Band, EOTO, and Dark Star Orchestra.

We hope everyone out there had a great holiday season and wonderful new years.

Thanks for listening,
- Steve

TWoL 117: Breaking News

Listen to Episode 117

This episode will be the gang’s last regular episode of 2012. Steve, Toonces and I recorded on a Tuesday night just like we used to. We discussed YEMSG, of course. We talked after parties, tweet-ups, the state of public trasportation post-Sandy, and the MSG renovations/death of MSG as we knew and loved it.

Toonces also ran through the Heavy Pets tour dates for the rest of the year. And if you are too busy Christmas shopping to hit up any more shows make sure you check out PhanArt’s Holiday Gift Guide. Finally we did a quick run through of what shows we have all seen recently.

Steve and I will be coming to you next with Special Reports from Mayan Holidaze. And check us out during YEMSG for Special Reports featuring us, Toonces, and special guests. We’ve been light on lot reports lately. Don’t forget to call and leave us a message at 419.NO.WOOKS.

Until next time, stay warm everyone!

TWoL 116: Bath Salts

Listen to Episode 116

Well, it’s been about a month since the last TWoL. Honestly though, it wasn’t our fault. There were quite the scheduling conflicts, Superstorm Sandy, and then live music. With so much to cover it was tough to decide where to start. Long story short, this episode contains reviews a plenty covering all the music we saw. This includes Trey, Phil, Everyone Orchestra, and Umphrey’s McGee. As a bonus, we also have PhanArt’s coverage of the Bear Creek Festival. Finally, we look ahead to Conspirator in NYC and Ryan Montbleau in Philly.

Hopefully you didn’t forget about us. We have lots in store for the fall and New Years. Stay tuned!!

TWoL 114: Coming Attractions

Listen to Episode 114

This week on lot, Steve and I were joined by returning guest, Danielle. You brought good reviews after her last appearance so we brought her back. We discussed a ton of upcoming shows to help you plan your fall schedule. First, we looked at the options for NYE. Of course, we are assuming that Phish will be back at MSG but if that’s not your thang check out one of these great NYE runs:

Bisco (NYC)

SCI, Yonder and STS9 (CO)

Umphrey’s and P Groove (Atlanta)

moe. (Worchester and Portland)

Lotus (Chicago > PA > MD)

Leftover Salmon (Chicago)

Lights All Night (TX)

Additionally, we talked about Trey Band’s fall tour and the recently announced Phil & Friends NY/NJ run coming up in November.

Thanks to regular callers Neighbor Nick, Underground Villain and ATL Mel. Check out our Facebook page for a picture of the Villain’s rage stick. We’re a little low on lot reports lately, folks, and we want to hear from you! 419.NO.WOOKS is the number.

We’ll be back with a recap of City Bisco in a week or so. Until then, book your NYE flights and hotels and fill us in on what shows you are attending and any travel deals/tips you find. Happy planning!

Be well,

Katie

TWoL 98: Phish at MSG, the Rainbow Unicorn Army, brought to you by Train Tacos.

Listen to Episode 98

And just like that, YEMSG is over.  But we still wanna talk about it.  This week, Steve, Katie and Toonces tackle some hard hitting news topics:  the ticket situation, the rainbow unicorn army, new MSG layout and security, train tacos, and other stuff that also happened.  Musically this may have not been the best run of the year, but the MSG party never disappoints.

Thanks to the listeners who called in from Phish, moe., and STS9.  We still wanna hear about all the other NYE shows across the land.  It’s never to late to call in a lot report at 419.NO.WOOKS.

In other news, Phil Lesh finally found a home for his ramble style Terrapin Crossroads.  The first performances are scheduled for March 2012.  Road trip anyone??

Led Zeppelin cover band extraordinaire Bustle in Your Hedgerow returns to Brooklyn Bowl on January 26th and 27th.  Featuring Marco Benevento, Dave Dreiwitz, Scott Metzger and Joe Russo, this is a Brooklyn tradition not to be missed!

And finally, Jam Cruise anticipation has reached fever pitch!  Steve and Noob Laura sail this Monday so stay tuned for updates and special reports from the boat.

Happy 2012 everyone!  Here’s to a ragin’ and music filled year!

Peace!

Katie

Episode 96: Get in da Choppa!

Listen to Episode 96

This week on lot Steve, Katie and Toonces learned that Phish is not the only band playing on NYE.  Who knew?  We discuss Hidden Track’s extensive run down of NYE shows across the land.  And remember, TWoL wants to hear about all of your NYE shenanigans so leave us a lot report at 419.NO.WOOKS in all of your tipsy NYE glory.  If you are in NYC for Phish, Mule or AoD don’t forget about the variety of Phish after parties going on around the city.

During ticket check we were left speechless when we learned that YEMSG tickets are going for as much as $250,000.  Since this is clearly not an option, don’t forget that you can enter to win NYE tickets from both Cash or Trade and Magic Hat.  Toonces also brought a listener question to the table about how to tell if you are being scammed in secondary market ticket sales.

Next, we discussed some 2012 festival news.  It’s never to early to start planning your summer festie season kids.  One of the earliest festivals of the year is Some Kind of Jam 7, held in late April in PA.  Wakarusa tickets went on sale last weekend.  Check out that one, scheduled for May 31-June 3 in AR.  Also, Summer Camp, returning to IL on Memorial Day weekend, will begin announcing its line up this week.

We had fantastic lot reports this week from SCI, Cornmeal, and Skydog.   And we of course talked about our recent shows:  moe., SCI, 311 and Big Gigantic.

Also, check out the Kickstarter fundraiser to get the Everyone Orchestra album made.  The album features a ton of our favorite musicians and promises to be a great example of true improvisation.

Finally, a big shout out to our our patron this week, Stuart, for his generous donation.  Always appreciated!

‘Til next time, rage on!

TWoL 92: We Kinda Regret to Inform You . . .

Listen to Episode 92

This week, Steve, Emilie and Katie tackled the big news of the day:  YEMSG lottery emails have arrived!!  Of course we were all big losers.  But someone out there must have gotten tickets right?  Congrats to the winners and please share the wealth!  And don’t forget about public on sale Saturday October 29th at noon.

If you were a winner or a loser in the lottery you should still check out the great after shows happening NYE weekend.  Bisco announced that they are playing December 28th late night so that they wouldn’t conflict with Phish.  Check out the details for that and the rest of their NYE run here.  Also for all you late night folks, Wyllys will be bringing his NY Hustler Ensemble (featuring the lovely and talented Jennifer Hartswick and Natalie Cressman) to Sullivan Hall for an after show on the 31st.  We also discussed a rumor about a possible Marco Benevento after show on December 29th.  Keep your eyes peeled for an official announcement kids!

Next, Steve filled us in on TAB’s October 12th show at the Wellmont.  He found it to be a great show for a $20 ticket with straightforward Trey rock.  And in the Ticket Check we learned that you can still see them at the Tabernacle on November 11th for cheap!  Also in Ticket Check, scalpers and crazy people are already posting YEMSG tickets for sale despite the fact that lottery announcements just started rolling in.  At least wait for public onsale people…  And finally, Jamcruise is sold out, sorry folks!  But give a shout out to Steve and Noob Laura on the boat!

Looking ahead we checked out Mr. Miner’s long awaited book release.  Railroad Earth is also doing a sweet Thanksgiving weekend in Stroudsburg, PA full of bluegrass, art, poetry and food.

Emilie has been a busy girl up in Boston and gave us recaps on Little Dragon at the Royale and The Low Anthem at the Somerville Theater.  She’s looking forward to Blizten Trapper, Dawes, and Dark Star Orchestra.  Steve and Katie will be hitting up the Lawn Boys this weekend in NYC for some epic Halloween show action.

That’s all she wrote this week.  Go catch some shows and leave us lot reports:  419-NO-WOOKS.  ‘Til next time, peace!

Special Report: Stuck on the Porch (The Phish, Starr Hill, and Chew Toys Episode)

Listen to Special Report: Stuck on the Pouch

Here we have a quick episode to wrap up the MSG coverage. We talk about what we saw on lot, on the Pay Per View, and everything in between. Most importantly, we snagged an extra “foam meatstick” to give away. These are a hot item, already going on eBay for upwards of 60 bones. If you want to win one, it’s simple. Just leave a comment on the blog here telling us about your NYE, or, leave us a voice mail to the same effect, 419-NO-WOOKS. We will pick whatever story we like (perhaps randomly ;-) , and ship one off to the winner. Being that it is a new year, any of our listeners are eligible. The only ones who can’t win are TWoL hosts and their respective families. Contest ends at the start of the next episode.

We hope everyone had a great holiday season, and we will see you next week with a “Year in Review” episode. Thanks to everyone who made our holiday run so special, including “Toonces” for the NYE stub down, N8Dizzle for the Starr Hill, and Whipped Lightning for countless hours of shenanigans.

Thanks for listening.

TWoL 55: TWoL After Dark

Listen to Episode 55

Going live after midnight on the east coast, we thought it was only appropriate to title this episode “TWoL After Dark”. But we wanted to get in one last “normal” show of 2010, so we all grabbed a few drinks, and made it happen. Big ups to everyone in the chat room who stayed up late with us.

No big news this week on the jamband scene, so we hit you with all the standards; lot reports, ticket checks and whimsical banter. Don’t be hesitant on downloading this one however, it’s pure classic TWoL. Emilie saw a ton of music, Nick discusses the tap water situation in Vegas, and I play a lot of inappropriate sound bytes throughout. Some final advice before the Phish holiday run starts is given, and we fill everyone in on our plans for the same. Spoiler alert: WINE BAR!!!

Without a doubt, thanks to everyone who has been listening, whether from episode 1 or episode 54. We appreciate the support. We hope everyone has a happy and safe holiday, and we will see you guys on lot in Worcester.

Be good,

Steve

PS: Special thanks to friend of the show “fishinole1″ for a h3tty donation which we will put towards some stickers to hand out during this upcoming run.

TWoL 42: I hate laser beams!

TWoL is back up and running after the brief hiatus occurred when all of Steve’s equipment was wook’d. We’re glad to say that we came back better than ever and with the new equipment the sound is even better. Thank you to everyone that gave us a h3tty kickdown on the cost of the stolen equipment.

A lot is going on this week so let’s get started! First up we talk about the Phish Fall Tour ticket onsales. I guess you can’t say it went “exactly” as planned. For some reason at the time of this blog post the first Phish show in NH in years and years isn’t sold out as well as the first night in Charleston?!? Obvious other shows were instant sellouts such as the smallest venue on tour, Utica, Broomfield and the 3 night Halloween run in Atlantic City.

Gordo announced his tour which to the delight of many a Phish phan starts right after the Halloween run and begins on the west coast.  He does a nice run up the west coast, through the midwest and ends back Boston just in time for Thanksgiving.

TAB at the TAB was announced for release as a live album with the first 500 pre-orders getting their copy signed! Steve’s memory gets a little hazy when we talk about this show, was he there or wasn’t he? You have to listen to find out.

New Years Eve shows are being announced like crazy right now. You can see a full list of what’s been announced so far here. Some notables are YMSB in St. Louis, moe. in Boston, Umphrey’s McGee in Chicago, and Paul Anka in Naples, FL.  ; )

As always to end the show we take a listen to your voicemails and Steve gives a quick lot report and untz report from his recent endeavor to see Bisco this last weekend. The untz was so epic that he is still trying to recover 3 days later.

Thank you everyone for your support, we’ll see you next week on lot!

TWoL 14: Moons over Brahami

This special episode was recorded live from Miami. We all traveled down to check out Phish for the 30th and NYE show and decided to put an episode together from the hotel room.

First up we talk about the lot scene at America Airlines Arena or lack thereof a lot. We found out that you make get closer than you want to with other phans in this particularly tiny lot.

We also talk about the iphone Phish apps Steve reviewed in our last episode. Steve and Laura managed to kill sometime on their long drive down to Florida using the app I Didn’t Know and we put the Phanatic app into good use last night to track all the bustouts from the show.

Speaking of bustouts last night was a great show and there were many bustouts throughout the night. We talk specifically about Tela and how one of our friends has been obsessed with this long-awaited song.

Often times we give travel tips, this time we talk about how our travels went getting to Miami and even managed to meet a Phan that came all the way from Germany. He runs a blog for all the Phans in Germany and Europe.

Even though we’re all in our late 20′s or older we discuss the age-old question of how much information do you give to your parents? Turns out some of us are still telling little white lies about where we go when we’re on tour.

TWoL 13: A Tour-ent of Questions

First up Laura and Steve give a review of the Further lot and what turns out to be in inexpensive but swanky hotel. We even find out that there’s some h3tty couch space up for grabs in the lobby.

Steve recently spent some time checking out all the Phish iphone apps that are available and gives a review on each. Find out which ones are worth it and which ones leave you wondering WTF were they thinking? Phanatic, I Didn’t Know, Phish Quiz.

We asked some of our loyal followers on twitter what they would like us to discuss in this weeks episode. Out of all the submissions we received we decided to go with 3. First is the importance, or lack thereof, of your personal music stats. Such as number of shows seen, bust-outs you were present for etc. Then we talk about the ever important topic of how seeing shows can affect your relationships both the good and the bad. Finally we discuss some budgeting strategies and tips to make it to that next show.

Thank you everyone for your support thus far, this will be our last podcast until we get together in Miami for NYE. Have a great holiday and we’ll see you on lot!

TWoL 12: Don’t Let Carini Get Ya

Brahs and Sisbrahs! 4 out of 5 Naked Guys agree, This Week on Lot Phall Tour wrap up is just about as exciting as hugging Trey.

It’s over, kids. Phish Fall Tour came and went and in it’s wake, it left a few balloons and a half eaten container of ganja icing. To recap the three amazing nights at the legendary Madison Square Garden, we’re joined by our contest winner Chris! He celebrated his 20th Phish show in style by walking into MSG with his buddy and their free tickets…right past Steve and Laura who has their fingers in the air. We all discuss the scene outside of MSG this year, making comparisons to NYE 2002 and pointing out that non-heads really have no idea what to make of it when Phans invade their sidewalks. Maybe all the business men are just thankful the nitrous tanks came back!

We ponder the question of whether MSG really has a lot. Does a “lot” need to have cars? Or can it just be a bunch of heads standing around waiting for a show to start? The hosts are divided on our opinions, so what do you think?

After the break, we follow the lines going South to Charlottesville. The snow let up just in time for everyone to arrive at JPJ and rage the lot proper. There was a healthy shakedown with some of our favorite vendors, including our good friend Jiggs. He was selling his “A Laser Pointer Doesn’t Make You Chris Kuroda” stickers…right across the way from a guy with a laser pointer. You can support Jiggs and his insanely truthy sticker by buying one and slapping it directly on Green Laser Pointer Guy’s forehead next time you see him.

After a quick ticket price check on Miami Phish NYE, we actually talk about another band! Wow! Steve and Laura are heading down to check out Further this weekend and are thrilled to see another lot. We’re looking for lot reports from those shows and are hoping to make some ticket money with the mobile wine bar. If you’ve been to a Further show this tour, let us know what you think!

Thanks to Chris for joining us on this episode of This Week on Lot! We’re glad to hear that he had a great time at MSG and we hope to hear from him again as he rages more lots in the future.

Be Good!

P.S. Make sure you listen to the very end.

TWoL 9: Ummmmm

As we gear up to hit as many lots as possible on Phish Fall Tour, we’re coming at you with some random news from across the jam band scenes.

We just can’t seem to shake Fest 8, it’s haunting us like any good Halloween show should! Hidden Track published Best Costumes at Festival 8 and we just cannot disagree with the profoundly impeccable taste of one Mr. Scott Bernstein. Be sure to check out #6 and put some faces to the voices you hear every week!

In other Phish news, we have the most recent ticket prices for shows on Fall tour. From the absurdly cheap ($10?!?!) to the not so absurdly cheap, ticket prices are looking much different as Phish 3.0 rolls on.

We here at This Week on Lot are all about expanding our musical horizons. We’re always happy to hear new bands and pass the good ones your way. This week, we have the band Must Stash Hat for you to sample and explore. Check ‘em out!

As if Umphrey’s McGee didn’t have enough members in their band, their 3 day run at the Higher Ground in Burlington showcased 4 guest musicians. The most prominent guest, Mr. Micheal Gordon of the Phish from Vermont, sat in for a 16+ minute jam at his alleged favorite venue.

Update: Our friend and yours, Willie Pritts of the Church of Universal Love and Music is officially shut down in Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Granted, we didn’t get the name of the establishment right in the podcast (we’re tired and Steve’s drinking vodka…give us a break!), we LOVE this place and wish Mr. Pritts the best of luck in finding a new venue for his congregation.

And last but not least, we need to start making our NYE plans. Will we have TWoL: Fiji? TWoL: Miami? TWoL: NYC? Well, we don’t have $4200 each so there goes Fiji. But maybe if we start saving now….?

Don’t forget to enter our MSG Phish ticket giveaway! We’ll see you on lot!

Sponsor for this this week is PhanArt.net. Be sure to stop by and tell them we sent you.

Our “Musical Shout Out” this week was Must Stash Hat. Check em out, they are from Canada, friend.
